Printing the Cover
Back to main printing page

The book cover was printed on a Mitsubishi sheetfed press. A sheetfed press was used since this was a short run of a small print area.

This view looks along the sheetfed press with the blank sheets starting in the foreground (at the right side of the photo).

This view looks at the sheetfed press from the opposite direction. Notice that the printing press has six units. (There is also a smaller unit at the end; I'm not sure what it is.) Four units are for the CMYK process colors, and the remaining two units can be used for spot color. Houston Freeways used the four process units only.

Here we are inspecting the sheets for color balance as they came off the press. The back cover had too much yellow in it, but the front cover looked good. We were trying to adjust the color so the back would have less yellow and the front would not become too blue. (When you take out yellow, the image becomes more blue.) Depending on what part of the run your book cover comes from, the back cover may have a slight yellow cast to it.

Here is a stack of sheets with the front and back covers.

This is the laminating machine. The cover sheets are laminated with clear plastic before they are attached to the hard covers.
